Japanese Corn & Japanese Porn

From time to time even I get burned out a bit, what with work, family and baseball... okay, not baseball, and as such I get a bit lazy in taking the time to do an essay for this blog.

Each blog does come out as an essay, as I either have to do a lot of research or I have to reach back into my bag of tricks to come up with something entertaining.

It's tough to do every day, and I'm coming up to around five years straight of not missing a day--an effort I am quite proud of.

As you can see from today's photograph above, it's funny because it's true.

Now... in case you don't get it, it's a witty bon mot playing on Japan's need to censor pornography showing penetration, specifically due to Article 175 of the Criminal Code of Japan (刑法 Keihō).

This law punishes people who sell or distribute obscene materials, punishable by fines or imprisonment, and can not only include adult videos, but also artwork such as paintings and ukiyo-e, sculptures and even manga (comic books).

Article 175 has been in existence in Japan since 1907, with little having changes since its inception.

Originally, the showing of pubic hair and genitalia was considered obscene and was part of this ban.

As you may know, I was in Japan between 1990-1993 and even then I can recall purchasing an American edition of Penthouse magazine, and noticed that all of the naughty bits had been scratched out... where some censor had to physically scratch out with sandpaper each page carefully so as to not tear the paper.

That surprised me, as I had heard all porn was censored with a black square or circle... but maybe that was only done for the domestic pornographic images, where it could be placed over before the printing process.

As for the adult videos I was given by some of the local Japanese, those same parts were obscured by mosaic tiles such as the type seen above in the corn photo.

Except for the adult video tapes that were not censored at all... those ones coming originally, I suppose, from the illegal yakuza sources who actually control the adult video output.

As well, there is urabon, which are magazine and websites that show uncensored and thus illegal in Japan images of naked women, and I would suppose naked men, and I suppose the engagement in sex.

To be honest, I haven't checked more than just the women. Those wishing to search for such material only need to Google 'urabon'... obviously not safe for work.

For the record, when I was on a telephone dating site back in the 1990s, there was one woman I chatted with who liked to do terrible things to vegetables which, I'm sure you will all be surprised, didn't impress me.

See? I just couldn't leave things alone - I had to get the full story. I'm not a well man, but I do like to teach.

Kanpia,
Andrew Joseph
